A credit balance occurs within a patient account when the amount paid to provider for a specific service or set of services is exceeds the entered charges. Overpayment may be caused by collecting receipts in excess of contracted amounts, by being paid more than once in a manner that results in a total payment in excess of the charge for services rendered, by being paid by more than one party for the same service, by submitting a duplicate claim(s) for the same charge(s), or by other similar billing mishaps.
